What is doula?

What is doula?

Postpartum doulas provide families information and support on infant feeding, bathing and sleeping, emotional and physical recovery from childbirth, infant soothing, organizing everyday life with multiples, and coping skills for new parents. (on our side with a little touch of French expertise) Doula in Greek means: mothering the mother. Turns out I have some Greek blood! You remember when I said it takes a village to raise a child, well doulas are part of your village with your family, friends, neighbors, nannies, daycare professionals around you.

What is la recrée and why is it so important?

What is la recrée and why is it so important?

(please read, VERY IMPORTANT to know)
The original word is "La recreation" (translated as playtime, what you would call recess in schools in the USA) Is a break granted to students in all different levels of schools. In the last 15 years, recess time in United States schools has decreased by 25% in order to increase time allotted for structured learning. The increasingly strong pressure for success in academics and sports has pushed institutions and parents to prioritize those over less structured activities. Thus, for many parents, back to school is synonymous with a race against time to register their children for multiple extra-curricular activities. From an early age, we look for excellence: lessons in coding, Chinese language, or gymnastics... sometimes forgetting play time, which is essential for children and just as crucial for the development of emotional, social and intellectual skills. A report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) highlights the importance of play, especially free play, in children's learning and development. Playing isn't just about fun, it's also about taking risks, experiencing new things and testing your limits. The games start very early with the children, with the first smiles, for example reciprocal interactions and nonverbal communication, later develop into language and social skills. Repetitive games give children the joy of being able to predict what is going to happen (for example peek a boo, or 1, 2, 3 soleil...) Play also promotes a child's sense of free will and progress towards independence. In the game, children solve problems and learn to concentrate, they also stimulate their curiosity and memory. Physical play is interesting, it allows children to take risks in a relatively safe environment. It encourages the development of empathy, as children are guided not to harm others. Finally, it has been shown that play has both direct and indirect effects on the structure and functioning of the brain. It causes changes at the molecular, cellular and behavioral levels. The advantages of recess games include improvements in executive function, language, social skills, mental and physical development, etc. Conversely, free play deprivation can lead to attention deficit, increased stress and hyperactivity. The American Academy of Pediatrics even recommends that physicians prescribe "play prescriptions" to support healthy development in children.

What do I need to about Infant
massage?

What do I need to know about Infant massage?

We recommend using vegetable oil, cold pressed. Best to wait 5 weeks after birth even for preemies to start infant massage. Younger babies might be too sleepy and this might be too stimulating for them. Max age 1 year old. Best time to perform infant massage is when the baby is in a quiet alert state: that means when your baby does calm and relaxed movements, the face is bright-eyed and receptive, regular breathing… If your baby is sleepy or is not in the mood to be massaged that's totally fine. You can borrow one of the instructor's babies to let your baby be or rest.
